Procrastination Addict

Hello. My name is Kara and I am addicted to procrastinating. There, I admitted I have a problem, so what's the next step?
I am one of those people that can find anything to do, so I don't have to do what I am supposed to do. Laundry needs to get done; ok, I'll do it after I find a movie for the kids. The kitchen needs to be cleaned; ok, I'll do it when I finish this paragraph, page, chapter, book.
My latest distraction is Bejeweled Blitz 2. I can't stop. I keep telling myself to stop after the next level and go work on my novel, or a character profile, or a short story. What happens is that when I reach the next level, I decide to do just one more, and then just one more, and again, just one more. The next thing I know, it's four in the morning and I've wasted all my writing time playing games. Not to mention what it does to my sleep schedule.
I need a twelve step program to stop procrastinating. Any advice on how to get on task and stay there?

  1. The only way I know is to make a list and force yourself to finish it. As far as my writing, I make a monthly list that way if I want to procrastinate a little in between, I still have plenty of time to get it all done. I check them off my list once I'm done. One of the most important parts of procrastinating though is you have to be able to prioritize! Decide which things on your list are most important to you getting done. Get those done first and then you wont feel so bad for procrastinating on the others. Just remember though when it comes to your writing... the more you procrastinate the less likely you'll get anything ready to submit and then your chances of getting that story published... is zero!!
Goodluck and sorry I'm just now seeing this post!

  2. I'm a terrible procrastinator as well. Like they say, "I haven't yet accomplished my goal of overcoming procrastination--but just you wait!"

This quote from an interview with Norton Juster (author of the ever-popular "The Phantom Tollbooth") reminds me of me, and I think you'll appreciate it. ;D Basically he said he wrote "Tollbooth" to get out of doing something else.
JUSTER: (With a big laugh) "I find -- this is a very personal thing. But I find the best things I do, I do when I'm trying to avoid doing something else I'm supposed to be doing. You know, you're working on something. You get bugged, or you lose your enthusiasm or something. So you turn to something else with an absolute vengeance. You throw every bit of your attention into it because you're trying to avoid in any way getting back to that other thing."
